Blessed Ignorance

Bloomin' at Lehigh

Training camp is a time of optimism and hype.  Jeremy Bloom is at the center of it on the Philadelphia Eagles squad.  Bloom was out of football for his final 2 years of college.  Drafted by the Eagles in the 5th round of 2006 draft, he never saw the field.  Stuck on injured reserve all season with various injuries attributed to his lack of football shape, Bloom studied and rebuilt his form.  After running a 4.49 at the pre-draft combine, he is now hitting the clock in the 4.2's.  All hope was that Bloom would become a star Returner.  Things are now changing.  Bloom is getting a lot of reps as a receiver, and he is making the best of the opportunity.  Hype it is, only time will tell.

Why can't we grow new body parts? (video)

A very pragmatic and inspiring presentation. Watching this was possibly the best 20 minutes I've spent all year. The presentation begins with the current state of healthcare and it's near future. Alan Russell then goes on to discuss regenerative cell generation and the amazing things that will be possible with proper funding.  I noticed some technology leaders in the audience, including Burt Rutan, the designer of SpaceShipOne.

Just Incredible!  You must watch.

Alan Russell studies regenerative medicine -- a breakthrough way of thinking about disease and injury by helping the body to rebuild itself. He shows how engineered tissue that "speaks the body's language" has helped a man regrow his lost fingertip, how stem cells can rebuild damaged heart muscle, and how cell therapy can regenerate the skin of burned soldiers. This new, low-impact medicine comes just in time, Russell says -- our aging population, with its steeply rising medical bills, will otherwise (and soon) cause a crisis in health care systems around the world. Some graphic medical imagery.

Apple Iphone is Telecom Bling -- Reporters missed the real story --- This is a Wireless story about Control of the wireless networks, cost of service, speed, and service restrictions

Before you buy an Apple iPhone, you should read the ‘fine print’ in AT&T’s wireless service contract. The first question every customer should ask is ---Why did Apple, the standard for innovative techno-cool, partner with a telecom curmudgeon that has a penchant for not caring about their customers. AT&T’s “Data Connect Unlimited” wireless network used for the iPhone is slow, expensive and a downright restrictive network, not ‘unlimited” as the name implies. Most reporters have been praising Apple’s new phone. Yet it is clear that while the phone is the new wunderkind of industrial design and customer interface, the reporters missed the main issue --- This is a wireless phone and broadband service, and an AT&T control issue -- not a techno-toy issue. And the fine print and tricks of the wireless trade are downright offensive and need to be addressed.

Anywho, check out some other weird foods from around the world, and be sure and share your own experiences in the comments!

Cone pizza's look like a great idea.  I'm always a fan for edible packaging.  The rest of the stuff is, well, not too appetizing.

Rebirth Of An Old Laptop

I dusted off an old laptop thats been sitting on my shelf.  A fresh install of XP and it's back in working order.  This machine is going to be used almost strictly for the web.  I won't be installing my typical apps on it, only web necessities.  With that said, I'll run down the list of what I have installed on this machine:
I was toying with doing a dual boot with Ubuntu Linux, but I think that may go against my goal here.  I simply want a fast web browsing laptop.  Hopefully, I'll be able to keep it that way.

From Egg to Chick

Can you imagine the progress from an egg to a chick? It’s amazing to see such progress in pictures. I hope they are not too disgusted to viewers. This is not what we usually seen on tv or magizines.

From Egg to Chick

This will undoubtedly gross you out. And no, they didn't kill a whole bunch of chickys to take these photos. I'm sure it was all done in a petri dish.

NASCAR sponsor to push for switch to ethanol fuel

By Lisa Zagaroli

McClatchy NewspapersWASHINGTON -

One of NASCAR's top sponsors plans to file a formal petition asking that it join other racing leagues and start using ethanol to power its racecars. The recommendation by General Motors Corp., planned for later this year, comes as NASCAR adjusts to using unleaded gasoline, decades behind the commercial marketplace.GM sponsors 22 NASCAR vehicles under its Chevrolet nameplate, about half the vehicles that start any given race. It's been promoting more environmentally friendly fuel for months, and now it plans to proceed with an official presentation to NASCAR ownership."We do have the technical know-how," said Brent Dewar, the vice president of GM North America sales, service and marketing. "It's something we would have to work in conjunction with NASCAR on. NASCAR would have to encourage other manufacturers to do it as well."

McClatchy Washington Bureau | 05/04/2007 | NASCAR sponsor to push for switch to ethanol fuel

Once upon a time, I was a NASCAR fan.  It was before NASCAR became such a pop-culture, show me the money sport.  Now, it feels like I'm watching a soccer mom's sport.  I'll hang on to that rant for later.

Chevy is waking up to reality.  Move to ethanol, which is used in so many other sports.  For years, going back to when I was a viewer, Environmental groups have snubbed NASCAR for running leaded fuel.  Now they are changing to unleaded.  Why not just make the jump to ethanol and advertise the benefits of the fuel.  Oh yeah, it's all about the money now.

Boyscout-Built Breeder Reactor

Growing up next to the "Bomb Plant", I'm always interested in Nuclear stuff. David Hahn, persuing his Eagle Scout merits, built a Breeder Reactor in his shed. All of the parts were available, it just took some digging to get everything needed. After irradiating the neighborhood, he dismantled it, but was soon discovered. Read the whole story below.
What happened when a teenager tried a dangerous experiment in his back yard

Tale of the Radioactive Boy Scout.

FROM HARPER'S MAGAZINE BY KEN SILVERSTEIN

Golf Manor, a subdivision in Commerce Township, Mich., some 25 miles outside of Detroit, is the kind of place where nothing unusual is supposed to happen, where the only thing lurking around the corner is an ice-cream truck. But June 26, 1995, was not a typical day.Ask Dottie Pease. Cruising down Pinto Drive, Pease saw half a dozen men crossing her neighbor's lawn. Three, in respirators and white moon suits, were dismantling her next-door neighbor's shed with electric saws, stuffing the pieces into large steel drums emblazoned with radioactive warning signs.Huddled with a group of neighbors, Pease was nervous. "I was pretty disturbed," she recalls. Publicly, the employees of the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that day said there was nothing to fear. The truth is far more bizarre: the shed was dangerously irradiated and, according to the EPA, up to 40,000 residents of the area could be at risk. The cleanup was provoked by the boy next door, David Hahn. He had attempted to build a nuclear reactor in his mother's shed following a Boy Scout merit-badge project.

The Snatch! - Extraordinary Rendition

Extraordinary Rendition is process of "Snatching" a suspected bad guy from another nation or an American airport and outsourcing their torture to other countries.Osama Hassan Mustafa Nasr, a muslim cleric, was snatched as he left his mosque in 2001. The Italian government has issued warrants for CIA operatives. A similar case occurred with a Canadian who was snatched at JFK. The canadian government conveniently swept it under the carpet for money. Diplomacy at it's best!
Egypt Cleric Says Americans Tortured Him

By NADIA ABOU EL-MAGD Associated Press Writer

February 25,2007 | CAIRO, Egypt -- An Egyptian cleric allegedly kidnapped off the streets of Italy by CIA agents in 2003 claimed Sunday that the Americans who abducted him "savagely" tortured him while deporting him to Egypt for interrogation. The allegations by Osama Hassan Mustafa Nasr, who also is known as Abu Omar, are likely to intensify criticism of the United States' "extraordinary rendition" program. Italy has indicted 26 Americans and five Italian agents accused of seizing the cleric in 2003.Nasr told the pan-Arab satellite TV station Al-Jazeera that he "was savagely tortured by the CIA when kidnapped and during my deportation" to Egypt.

Guatemala Sinkhole

I read about this the other day. I believe it was on CNN, so I filed it under dramatic fluff. Well, here's the pictures. Amazing! Follow the link below.
GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala - A 330-foot-deep sinkhole killed at least two teenagers as it swallowed about a dozen homes early Friday and forced the evacuation of nearly 1,000 people in a crowded Guatemala City neighborhood. Officials blamed the sinkhole on recent rains and an underground sewage flow from a ruptured main.

Mickey Avalon : Train Wreck = Amusing Rhymes... And Simon Rex Is Involved!

With a childhood rough enough to guarantee him rock star success, by the time he was out of his teenage years -- at least according to the few details he's given -- Mickey Avalon had sold pot (with his mother), been addicted to heroin and dope, worked as a graffiti artist in L.A., converted to Orthodox Judaism (his parents were both non-practicing Jews, and his paternal grandparents were survivors of Auschwitz), got married and had a daughter, prostituted himself for drug money, watched his father die, and found his sister's dead body. All of this gave ample material for his rhymes, which he started writing after his pal, the former MTV VJ Simon Rex, encouraged him to compose his own songs.

Would It Sell?

Stuck in traffic, staring at the ass-end of a car I can't afford, it came to me. Something that can sum up the mornings of the average Joe here in the "Nutmeg" state. Yes, it is a bumper sticker slogan:

"Brake if you love Connecticut Highways"

Had to mention it. Just spent an hour traveling 13 miles.

Obama Smacks Down Aussie PM

Pres Candidate Obama is clearly against the troop "Surge". Australian PM John Howard in turn declares Al Qaeda is rooting for Obama. The Senator responds with the following smackdown. I think these guys should meet on The View.

"If he's ginned up to fight the good fight in Iraq, I would suggest that he calls up another 20,000 Australians and sends them to Iraq. Otherwise it's just a bunch of empty rhetoric," Obama said.

Oh My!

I could come up with some catchy "Vixen of the Week" type slogan here, but then I would be required to actively search for the cute, relative unknowns on a periodic basis. Nathalie was the only highlight of the IQ deterioriating movie, Tokyo Drift. So yes, I had to Google her. She was born in Peru and raised in Australia, creating quite an exotic package.

Nathalie Kelley (born in Lima, Peru in March 10, 1985) is an Australian actress, most notable for playing Lucas Black's love interest in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift.Born in Lima, Peru, to a Peruvian mother and Argentine father, Kelley moved to Sydney, Australia at the age of 2. She dreamed about being an actress when she was 13 years old, and coincidentally attended the same school as Nicole Kidman, North Sydney Girls High School on Sydney's north shore. She studied Politics and International Relations at the University of New South Wales, and also worked as a volunteer with indigenous Australian youth in the inner-city suburb of Redfern before moving to Los Angeles and becoming an actress.Kelley began her acting career with the lead part in a WB pilot Mermaid, and in 2006 appeared in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift alongside Bow Wow and Lucas Black. In 2007 she will appear in a movie called Loaded alongside Jesse Metcalfe.
